In  the English  Department  we  focus  on  developing  an  interest  in  literature  through  using  our  excellent  school  library  facilities.  All  classes  are  brought  to  the  library  on  a  regular  basis  and  can  borrow  from  an  extensive  range  of  books.  We  encourage  an  appreciation  of  drama  which  is  integrated  to  the  Junior  and  Leaving Cert  programmes,  with  annual  theatre  visits  for  exam  classes.
An  example  of  our  commitment  to  fostering  an  interest  in  all  aspects  of  English  Literature  is  our  regular  participation  in  various  National  and   in-house  writing  competitions  (Listowel  Writers  Week,   Concern  Writing  Competition).
The  English  Department  focus  on  the  needs  and  abilities  of  all  our  students.  We  liaise  with  and  work  in  co-operation  with the  Special  Needs  Department  in  ensuing  that  students  who  may  need  extra  help  in  given  the  opportunity  to  avail  of  it.    English  is  offered  at  Higher  and  Ordinary  Levels  for  Junior  and  Leaving  Cert.  All  students  are  encouraged  to  realise  their  potential  and  urged  to  aim  to  sit  the  Higher  Level  Paper.
In  short  the  focus  of  the  English  Department  of  St.  Mary’s  C.B.S.   is  to  continually  improve  the  literacy  and  auracy    skills  of  all  our students  as  they  prepare  for state  exams  but  also to  develop  a  love  of  and  interests  in  literature  outside  of  the  classroom.
