History
History Subject Profile.
History is a subject currently offered at core levels in both Junior Cert and Transition Year in the school. It is offered as an option at Senior Cycle.
The syllabus as laid down by the Dept. of Education is followed at both Junior and Leaving Cert Levels. The new Leaving Cert Course now offers scope to students to study events both at home and abroad up to the early 1990s.
Tours are encouraged at all levels to keep students’ understanding of events in the past and to encourage interest in the subject. Projects are also carried out at all levels. Previous tours have included Kilmanham, Auschnutz, Dachair, Ferrycarrig National Histroy Museum, Aran Islands, Glasnevin, Collins Barracks, Newgrange.
The History Dept. of St. Mary’s C.B.S. aims to develop a knowledge and understanding of human activity in the past, develop research skills, encourage students to think critically.
The study of history is a good basis to prepare students for careers in the following;
Archaeology, Journalists, Politics, Teaching, Law, Archives, Library Services, Economics.
