Physics

Physics  Profile.

 

 The  aim  of  Physics  at  Leaving Cert  Level  is  to  give  the student  an  understanding   of  the  fundamental  principles  of  Physics  and  their  application  to  everyday  life.  This  will enable  the  student  to  develop  an  understanding  of  the  scientific  method  along  with  an  ability  to  observe,  think  logically  and  to  communicate  effectively.  

Science  Technology  and  Society  (STS)  is  an  integral  part  of  the  Syllabus  so  that  the student  can  be  aware  of  the principals  of  the application  in  the  everyday  world.

Physics  is  presented  at ordinary  and  Higher  Level  under  the  headlines;

  • Mechanics
  • Heat  and  temperature
  • Light,  waves  and  sound
  • Electricity
  • Modern  and  particle  Physics.

Students  follow  a  course  of  practical  work  with  prescribed  experiments  in  each  of  the main sections.  Students  are  required  to  keep  a record  of this  work.

Leaving  Cert  Physics  is  assessed  by means  of  an  examination  paper  at  each  level.

Physics  is  a  useful  subject  for  many  courses  and  careers  and  a  good  foundation  for  a  broad  range  of  scientific  and  technical  careers.  Many  technical  courses  involve  components  of  Physics.  Students  who  are  interested  in  proceeding  further  with Physics,  the  Institute  of  Physics  provides  information  on  the range  of  careers  that  students  can  follow.
