Science Profile.
Science deals with our knowledge and understanding of our world. The study of science in concerned with the understanding of a body of scientific knowledge and the development of scientific skills through practical activities. It contributes to the development of logical thinking and reasoning, and skills of observation, measurement, interpretation, numeracy, problem solving and decision making.
The three main areas are
1. Biology: Human Biology (digestion, skeleton, the senses,
reproduction).Plant Biology (photosynthesis, reproduction).
2. Chemistry: Classification of substances, gases, atomic
structure, acids and bases.
3. Physics: Force and energy (heat, light and sound).
Magnetism, electricity.
Students are taught in mixed ability groups and can study science at either ordinary or higher level. Assessment of science at Junior Cert Level is done as two components coursework (35% of marks) and an examination paper (65% of marks).
Science can be studied at Leaving Cert level as individual subjects in physics, chemistry, biology and agriculture science.
